    Which Research Council Funds Your PhD? UKRI Doctoral Training by Council and Discipline in Numbers (2026)

    In 2026 UKRI’s seven research councils list 65 current EPSRC centres for doctoral training, 17 MRC and 15 ESRC doctoral partnerships, 16 BBSRC landscape awards and formula-allocated studentships at 50 AHRC, more than 40 EPSRC and more than 60 STFC institutions — and which of those a candidate can apply to is decided by discipline before anything else.

    The figures below come from UKRI’s doctoral landscape award and doctoral focal award investment lists, published in March 2026 and updated through May 2026, and from UKRI’s studentship guidance for students. They describe the funded routes as they stand for candidates starting in 2026 and 2027. Counts are of investments listed by UKRI, not of studentships, except where UKRI gives a studentship figure; where a council publishes no number, that is said rather than estimated. Regulations and application routes differ by institution, so check the partnership’s own pages before applying.

    The two award types, and which councils use which

    UKRI states that landscape awards and focal awards are the two types of doctoral training investment under its collective talent funding scheme. Landscape awards are broad, flexible investments across a council’s subject areas; focal awards are theme-based, strategic and often cross-council, and include the centres for doctoral training. Three councils now allocate landscape awards by formula to individual institutions — EPSRC, STFC and, from 2026, AHRC — while the others award them competitively to consortia. The practical consequence for a candidate: in engineering, physical sciences, astronomy and particle physics, and from 2026 the arts and humanities, the funded studentships sit inside the university you apply to; in the social, biological, medical and environmental sciences they sit inside a regional partnership that recruits across several universities.

    What the stipend is worth across every council

    The minimum stipend is set by UKRI and does not vary by council. UKRI’s guidance for students gives £20,780 for 2025 to September 2026 and £21,805 from 1 October 2026, with London weighting taking those to £22,780 and £23,805; the same page notes that EPSRC does not offer a London weighting, although grant holders may pay more within their budgets regardless of location. Part-time students receive a pro-rated amount.     Engineering and physical sciences: the largest and most institution-bound map

    EPSRC is the council with the most listed investments and the most formula-driven structure. Its university doctoral landscape awards fund more than 40 institutions from grants totalling £300 million, each with at least three studentships per intake year; the industrial doctoral landscape awards route allocates studentship vouchers to industry partners for four-year doctorates with an academic partner. On the focal side, UKRI lists 65 current EPSRC CDTs grouped in nine themes, and the distribution shows where the council has concentrated its cohort training.

    For a candidate in computer science or engineering this means two distinct applications exist in the same department: a landscape studentship attached to a supervisor, and a CDT place with a first-year cohort programme. The two shapes are compared in our piece on integrated and traditional PhD routes. UKRI also notes that the CDTs funded in its 2018 round — more than 70 — are no longer recruiting, so a centre named in a paper from 2021 may not exist for a 2026 applicant.

    In the social, biological, medical and environmental sciences the funded place sits inside a regional partnership, not a single university.

    Social sciences: fifteen partnerships and a hard boundary with other councils

    ESRC funds its doctoral training through 15 partnerships, every one listed with a final cohort starting in 2028, and each a consortium: the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science spans 14 institutions, the Midlands Graduate School, the South West, SENSS and NINE partnerships have seven or eight members each, and the LSE partnership is the only single-institution award. The discipline boundary matters more here than elsewhere. Psychology, health services research and human geography sit on the ESRC–MRC–NERC borders, and a project on the wrong side is not fundable by the partnership that reads it.     Biosciences, biomedicine and environment: partnerships with different clocks

    The three life-and-environment councils run partnership models on different cycles. BBSRC’s 16 landscape awards all list final cohorts starting in 2029 and run from Cambridge, Norwich, London, the Midlands, the North West, Yorkshire, Scotland and Wales, with two — ILESLA at Oxford and QUARTILES at Aberdeen and Belfast — co-funded with NERC. MRC’s 17 partnerships all list final cohorts starting in 2026, which means a candidate applying for October 2027 should expect a new round of awards rather than the partnerships named today. NERC’s 23 listed investments mix second-round partnerships whose final cohorts started in 2024 with landscape awards running to 2029, several of them successors to the same consortium under a new name.     Arts and humanities: the switch to formula funding in 2026

    AHRC is the council whose map changed most. UKRI records that AHRC moved to allocating landscape awards by formula from 2026: 50 institutions, 15 studentships each, three a year for five years, with the final cohort starting in October 2031, supported by seven regional hubs for cohort training. The ten competition-era partnerships — CHASE, LAHP, Midlands4Cities, the North West Consortium, Northern Bridge, Open-Oxford-Cambridge, SGSAH, SWWDTP, technē and the White Rose College — all list their final cohort as 2025, and the collaborative doctoral partnerships with museums, archives and other non-university hosts continue with cohorts of at least three studentships a year. For an applicant in 2026 the practical change is that the studentship is now the institution’s to award, not the consortium’s.

    Astronomy, particle and nuclear physics: many institutions, a fixed annual number

    STFC is the only council for which UKRI publishes an annual studentship figure in the 2026 list: approximately 220 studentships a year across more than 60 institutions, each awarded for at least three years within the council’s core programme. Its five focal awards are all data-intensive science CDTs with final cohorts in 2024, so the landscape route is the live one for 2026 applicants.

    What the figures do not show

    Three gaps should be stated plainly. First, UKRI’s lists count investments, not studentships; outside STFC, AHRC and EPSRC’s minimum-per-intake rule, the number of funded places per partnership is published by the partnership, not by UKRI. Second, the lists describe UKRI routes only; charity, industry and university-funded studentships are not in them, and the trade-offs of going without a council award are set out in our comparison of UKRI studentships and self-funding. Third, none of the figures say who gets the places; UKRI’s own equalities monitoring, which we examine in diversity data on UK doctoral researchers, is the source for that.

    Who Gets a UKRI Studentship? Diversity Data on UK Doctoral Researchers (2026)

    In 2023 to 2024, UKRI recorded 5,165 new funded doctoral studentship starts. 47% reported their gender as female, up from 40% a decade earlier; 10% declared a disability; and 2% were recorded as Black. That last figure sits inside a dataset where ethnicity was not disclosed for 26% of starts and unknown for a further 9% — a gap UKRI itself describes as leaving its understanding “partial”.

    All figures on this page are from UKRI’s equalities monitoring for 2023 to 2024 unless stated otherwise. This is the most detailed public dataset on who holds a funded UK doctoral studentship, and it comes with unusually candid limitations that belong beside every number.

    What exactly is this dataset — and what is it not?

    Three scope notes, all of them from UKRI’s own text, and all of them load-bearing.

    It is not an award rate. UKRI states plainly that “UKRI does not publish data on application and award rates for studentship starts”, because the source data and funding mechanism differ from research grants. What is published is “the distribution of awards as reported by holders of our PhD training grants”. So these numbers describe who started a funded studentship, not who applied, and nothing here tells you any group’s chance of success.

    There is no benchmark this year. UKRI’s earlier reports compared studentship figures against HESA student data; the 2023–24 report does not, because “the discrepancies in reporting windows mean that HESA data for 2023 to 2024 was not available when this report was written, so we cannot provide benchmarks in this report.” That is the single most important caveat on this page: without a benchmark you cannot say from these figures alone whether any group is over- or under-represented relative to the doctoral population.

    It covers UKRI funding only. The 5,165 starts are UKRI-funded studentships, a minority of all doctoral registrations — the full population figures, with their own caveats, are in our page on how many PhD students there are in the UK. Self-funded, university-funded, charity-funded and internationally funded researchers are all outside this dataset.

    Where the funded studentships actually are

    Before any characteristic, one structural fact shapes everything else: funded doctoral study in the UK is heavily concentrated by discipline.

    One council accounts for 43% of all new UKRI studentships. That matters for reading every figure that follows, because council-level differences in age, disability and ethnicity are partly disciplinary composition rather than anything about funding decisions — and the UKRI aggregate is, by construction, weighted heavily toward EPSRC.

    Sex and gender

    The share of studentship starts reporting their gender as female has risen from 40% in 2014–15 to 47% in 2023–24 — a decade of steady movement toward parity within the funded population.

    Two cautions. UKRI collects this through a system offering male, female or “not disclosed”, and acknowledges directly that “these are not in alignment with data reporting categories for equality monitoring data”, noting it is expanding collection to sex and gender reassignment in its newer funding service. And the comparison people most want to make — against the 55% female share of all UK postgraduate researchers reported by HESA — is exactly the benchmark UKRI declined to publish this year, and involves different populations and reporting windows. The gap between 47% and 55% is worth noticing and not worth quoting as a finding.

    Ethnicity, and the hole in the middle of it

    The recorded distribution across UKRI overall is White 46%, Asian 12%, Mixed 4%, Black 2%, Other 1% — with not disclosed 26% and unknown 9%. UKRI’s own summary is that non-disclosure “has been consistently high since 2014 to 2015”, so “our understanding of ethnicity for studentships is partial”.

    Take that seriously before quoting any of the group figures. More than a third of the records carry no usable ethnicity, which is nearly three times the size of the largest recorded minority group. Every percentage above is a share of all starts including the undisclosed, so the true composition of the disclosed-plus-undisclosed population could differ materially in either direction.

    What can be said with confidence is what UKRI itself says: after the White group, and excluding non-disclosed and unknown, the highest proportion of starts at every council came from the Asian ethnic group. The Black share is low everywhere in the recorded data — 5% at ESRC, 3% at BBSRC and MRC, 2% at EPSRC and NERC, 1% at AHRC, and suppressed at STFC because the count was too small to report.

    Adjacent to the studentship data, and about a different population, UKRI’s grant figures show a pattern worth knowing if you are planning an academic career: among principal investigator applicants, those from the White ethnic group had a significantly higher award rate (34%) than Asian (25%) and Black (13%) applicants. UKRI’s own framing is that such differences “reflect systemic patterns rather than biases within the decision-making process itself”. Those are established researchers rather than doctoral candidates, and the numbers must not be blended — but they describe the funding environment a doctoral graduate enters, alongside the destinations data in our page on UK PhD graduate career outcomes.

    Disability

    10% of UKRI-funded students declared a disability in 2023–24 — 500 studentships — and UKRI reports the proportion has been increasing since 2014–15. The council spread is wide: 15% at AHRC (80 studentships) down to 8% at both EPSRC and BBSRC (175 and 45 studentships respectively).

    Read that as a declaration rate rather than a prevalence rate. It measures who told a funder, through a monitoring form, at the point of a studentship start — which is a very different thing from who is disabled. Disclosure is shaped by whether a condition was diagnosed, whether the person identifies with the term, and whether they expect disclosure to help or hurt. The rise since 2014–15 is at least partly a rise in willingness to disclose.

    Age

    At every council, the largest group was aged 29 or under — but the range is enormous, from 93% at STFC to 50% at AHRC. Half of arts and humanities studentship starts go to people aged 30 or over.

    That single contrast explains a good deal that is otherwise mysterious about doctoral life. Arts and humanities cohorts contain far more people with careers, dependants and mortgages, for whom a stipend is a pay cut rather than a first salary — one reason the same disciplines show the highest rates of part-time study and part-time working afterwards. It is also worth holding beside the published stipend rates: the same figure is a reasonable starting income at 23 and an acute problem at 38.

    Every figure in this dataset is a declaration rate. What a monitoring form captures is who chose to answer it, which is why a quarter of the ethnicity field is empty.

    How to cite these figures without overclaiming

    Attribute to UKRI equalities monitoring, 2023 to 2024, and name the population precisely: UKRI-funded doctoral studentship starts, not “UK PhD students”. Never present these as award rates, because UKRI does not publish them and the report says so. Always carry the non-disclosure figure alongside any ethnicity percentage. Do not benchmark against HESA using this report, since UKRI withheld the comparison for stated reasons. Note that rates for groups of fewer than five individuals are not reported and suppressed cells are marked, so small-group figures are absent rather than zero. And prefer the council-level tables to the UKRI aggregate wherever your argument is disciplinary, since the aggregate is dominated by EPSRC’s 43% share.

    What the data cannot tell you, and where to look instead

    This dataset describes who starts. It says nothing about who finishes, who has a good experience, or who leaves. Completion and attrition by characteristic are not published as a routine UK series at all — treat any precise claim about them with suspicion unless it names a study.     How does this compare with the whole doctoral population?

    UKRI deliberately did not benchmark against HESA in this report, because comparable HESA data was unavailable when it was written. Anyone drawing the comparison is doing something the funder declined to do, and should say so.

    Why do arts and humanities cohorts look so different?

    Age is the main driver: 50% of AHRC studentship starts were aged 30 or over, against 7% at STFC. Older cohorts change everything downstream — funding pressure, part-time study, caring responsibilities and career expectations.

    Does UKRI publish data on completion by ethnicity or disability?

    Not as part of this monitoring, which covers starts. There is no routine UK-wide series on doctoral completion by characteristic, so precise claims about attrition gaps need a named study behind them.

    Start with a correction: “1+3” is no longer accurate everywhere

    The shorthand every applicant learns is “1+3” — one master’s year plus three doctoral years. In engineering and physical sciences it still describes reality. In the social sciences it is now out of date.

    The ESRC introduced a new PhD model from 2024/25, and its standard studentship is now 3.5 years. Doctoral Training Partnerships have relabelled accordingly: UBEL DTP, for instance, states that its ESRC studentships “are structured around the following routes: 1+3.5, +3.5, and +4.5 funding“, with the caveat that “not all routes are available in all institutions or pathways”. So the integrated social-science route is four and a half funded years, not four, and the direct-entry route is three and a half, not three.

    That extra half-year is not a bonus; it is a recognition of how long doctorates actually take. There is a further wrinkle: from October 2024 the ESRC made “Research in Practice” a core component, meaning all its funded students “should have the opportunity to complete a high-quality placement in academia, policy, business or civil society organisations as part of their training”. Where a placement is taken, additional funded time may follow — check your own DTP’s award structure page, because the routes on offer differ by institution and pathway.

    Note also what this does not establish. As our stipends and funding roundup records, UKRI publishes no sector-wide studentship duration — the length is devolved to the individual research council. ESRC’s 3.5 years is an ESRC number, not a UK one, and quoting it as though it covers EPSRC or AHRC is a mistake.

    Route 1: The direct-entry PhD

    You arrive with a master’s, or with equivalent research training, and begin your project in week one. The research years are the whole degree, punctuated by the upgrade or confirmation review and then the examination.

    Who it suits: anyone with a settled research question, the methods training to pursue it, and a supervisor already identified — frequently someone who wrote their own proposal, as covered in our guide to the PhD research proposal for a UK studentship.

    Where it falls short: the first year is the loneliest in UK doctoral education. There is no cohort by construction, no structured training unless your department provides it, and no institutional mechanism for discovering that your methods need work before you are committed to them. It is also the route with the least slack: if the project turns out to be undoable, you find out in year two with no taught year absorbed as a buffer.

    Route 2: The integrated PhD

    A one-year master’s — usually an MRes, sometimes a taught MSc or MA in research methods — followed by the doctorate, funded and administered as one award. The master’s year is not a separate hurdle you must reapply after; progression is normally automatic on satisfactory performance.

    Who it suits: three groups specifically. People without a master’s who would otherwise have to fund one privately. People changing discipline, for whom the taught year is genuine retraining rather than revision. And people whose question is a direction rather than a project — the master’s year is where a direction becomes a design.

    Where it falls short at doctoral scale: it is a year longer, which is a year of stipend-level earnings foregone against a graduate salary. It adds a progression gate. And if you already have a good master’s in the right field, the taught year can be genuinely redundant — funders know this, which is why “+3.5” exists as the alternative route within the same schemes.

    One administrative trap worth knowing: on integrated routes you often make two applications. UBEL’s guidance is explicit that 1+3.5 applicants “will need to make separate applications for both your Masters and doctoral programmes”, either simultaneously or during the master’s year.

    The comparison is not three years against four. It is what the first year contains — and whether you would otherwise have paid for it yourself.

    Route 3: The CDT cohort programme

    Centres for Doctoral Training are the most structured route, and the one whose defining feature is other people. A CDT recruits a cohort each year and puts them through a shared training year before doctoral projects begin.

    Cambridge’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment is a representative example, describing its MRes+PhD as “a 1+3 model with a one year Masters course with taught and research elements followed by a three year PhD programme”. Its first year is dense and deliberately broad: an induction and a field trip to construction sites and sites of engineering or historical importance; three bespoke core taught modules covering theory, research methods and multidisciplinarity; two electives drawn from Engineering and related departments; an individual desktop study; a mini-project with a strong industry link; and a group project built on large-scale case studies such as Crossrail, High Speed 2 and the Severn Tidal Power project.

    Who it suits: researchers in interdisciplinary or applied fields, anyone who wants training breadth beyond their own project, and — not a small thing — anyone who suspects that four years of solitary work would not suit them. The cohort is a support structure the direct-entry route simply does not have.

    Where it falls short: less autonomy. Projects are typically chosen from a list shaped by the centre’s themes and its industrial partners, so if you arrive with a specific question of your own, a CDT may be the wrong container. Progression to the doctorate is also conditional on the training year, and the training year is real work.

    Route 4: The industry-embedded route

    The longest and least known option. Cambridge’s Industry+ scheme, run with Arup and Laing O’Rourke, has students “spend a year employed by one of these partners before coming to Cambridge to start their MRes+PhD programme” — a five-year programme of an industrial year, then one MRes year, then three PhD years. During the industrial year students are part of the company’s graduate training programme while remaining supported by the centre, visiting Cambridge to meet an advisor and take part in training. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK.

    Who it suits: anyone whose career plan runs through industry rather than academia — which, on the destinations evidence, is most doctoral graduates. Only 41% of UK doctoral graduates were working in higher education fifteen months after graduating, and research roles outside universities are both growing and better paid than academic research posts; the figures are in our page on doctoral career destinations.

    Where it falls short: five years is a long commitment, the research agenda is shaped by a partner’s needs, and eligibility rules exclude some international applicants. Publication and confidentiality arrangements also need checking early if you intend a thesis by publication.

    The five questions that actually decide it

    1. Do you already have research training in the right methods? If yes, the taught year is redundant and the direct-entry route is the efficient choice. If no, someone has to pay for that training, and an integrated award means it is not you.
    2. Is your question a project or a direction? A project wants direct entry. A direction wants a year to become one.
    3. How well do you work alone? This is the question applicants weigh least and regret most. A CDT cohort is a structural answer to the isolation that the sector’s own experience data keeps surfacing.
    4. Where do you want to be at the end? Industry-embedded and CDT routes build networks in the direction most doctoral graduates actually go.
    5. What is the funded time, exactly? Not the advertised length — the funded length, in your council’s current model, for your specific route. Ask the DTP or centre directly, and get the answer in writing before you accept.

    The recommendation

    Take the direct-entry route if you have a relevant master’s and a settled question, because the taught year buys you nothing you do not already have. Take an integrated route if you lack the master’s, are switching field, or have a direction rather than a design — the extra year is funded training you would otherwise have to purchase. Take a CDT if your field is interdisciplinary or applied, or if you know that four years alone would not work for you. Take an industry-embedded route only if you actively want an industrial career, in which case it is the strongest option on this page and badly under-applied for.

    This decision is usually framed as “can I get funding, and if not, should I pay?”. That framing hides the two things that actually differ, which are how much control you have over the research question and how much of your own money and time is at risk. Comparison first, then the numbers behind it.

    The fee asymmetry that decides most of this

    UK home doctoral fees are effectively capped by the sector’s own convention of following the research council rate. Queen Mary University of London charges home research students £5,006 full-time in 2025-26, rising to £5,238 for 2026-27, with part-time at exactly half, and explains why: “tuition fees for Home students are set by UK Research Council (UKRI) and each year UKRI usually increases their fee and stipend levels in line with inflation.” The University of York states the same principle as policy — for UK home students, “fees will increase in line with, and no higher than, the prevailing UKRI fee rate as published at ukri.org”.

    International fees are not pegged to anything of the kind. York’s international research fees for 2026/27 sit at £30,950 a year for its science and technical band and £25,350 for humanities and social sciences, with part-time typically half, and increases running “in line with inflation (determined by the Consumer Price Index inflation rate, up to a maximum of 10%)”.

    Put three or four years against those numbers and the two self-funded routes are not the same decision at all. A home candidate at the pegged rate is looking at roughly £16,000 in fees over three years. An international candidate in York’s science band is looking at roughly £93,000 in fees over three years — before rent, before a single conference, and before the years many candidates need beyond the third.

    Neither figure includes what departments charge on top. Queen Mary notes that some programmes carry additional “fee bands” covering “equipment, laboratory consumables, specialist technical support, data processing, training and travel”, and York flags separate research training support charges for laboratory consumables, fieldwork, travel and conference expenses. On a funded studentship these are usually met by the research training support grant. Self-funded, they are yours, and they are the costs applicants forget entirely.

    The funded route usually means choosing from projects someone else defined. That is the real trade, and it is not obviously a bad one.

    Route 1: The UKRI-funded studentship

    Fees paid from a training grant, a tax-free stipend at or above the published minimum, a research training support grant, and a set of entitlements — leave, mode changes, phased return — that come with published terms behind them.     Where it falls short. The project may not be yours. Studentships attached to a supervisor’s grant or a centre’s theme come with the question substantially defined, and “close enough to my interests” in year one can feel very different in year three. The funded period is finite and enforced in practice by the expectation that you submit within it. And UKRI does not publish a sector-wide duration — the length is devolved to the awarding council, so your offer letter is the only authority on how long the money lasts.

    One thing that is not a shortcoming, contrary to a persistent belief: nobody can tell you your odds. UKRI states plainly that it does not publish data on application and award rates for studentship starts, so any quoted success rate for a research council studentship is somebody’s guess.

    Route 2: Self-funding as a home student

    At the pegged rate this is the least-discussed viable route in UK doctoral education. Fees of a few thousand a year are within reach of many people working full-time, and part-time registration turns the doctorate into a long project rather than a career interruption.

    Who it suits: someone with a question of their own that no advertised studentship covers; someone whose employer will contribute or give study time; someone mid-career who cannot live on a stipend and does not need to; and anyone for whom the alternative is not doing the doctorate at all.

    Where it falls short at doctoral scale. The obvious cost is that you earn nothing extra and pay fees for four to seven years, since part-time routes run long. The less obvious costs are the ones that actually bite. You are not in a cohort by default, and isolation is the sector’s most consistently reported doctoral problem — the figures in our summary of PhD wellbeing and supervision satisfaction put financial difficulties behind mental and emotional health among reasons researchers consider leaving, and both are worse without a peer group. Training that a DTP would supply and fund may be chargeable. And there is no external deadline: nothing stops a self-funded part-time doctorate drifting except your own structure, which is why the registration limits in your regulations matter more to you than to a funded candidate.

    What self-funding does not buy you is a lower standard. Examiners apply the same doctoral criteria whatever paid for the fees, and the requirement for an original contribution is identical.

    Route 3: Self-funding as an international student

    The same route with an order of magnitude more money at stake and materially less flexibility. Three constraints stack on top of everything in Route 2.

    Fees are the institution’s own and can approach thirty-one thousand pounds a year, as York’s science band shows, with annual increases tracking CPI up to a cap of ten per cent — so budget on the fee rising each year rather than holding. Visa conditions typically require full-time study, which removes the part-time option that makes home self-funding workable, and they restrict how much you can work. And UKRI contributes only up to home fee rates where a studentship is involved at all, so even a partial award may leave a fee gap to cover.

    The honest recommendation for this group is to widen the search before accepting a self-funded offer: overseas government scholarships, university fee waivers and fee-band awards, charity and trust funding, and departments that price research degrees at or near the home rate for particular schemes. A funded place at a less prestigious department is almost always a better outcome than a self-funded place at a famous one.

    The seven questions to ask before accepting either

    1. What exactly is funded, and for how long? Fees, stipend, RTSG, conference budget — itemised, in writing, with the funded period stated. There is no national number to fall back on.
    2. Whose project is it? If the question is already defined, read it as the thing you will live inside for four years, not as a starting point you will negotiate later.
    3. What happens if you overrun? Ask what registration status and what fee apply after the funded or expected period ends. This is the single most under-asked question in UK doctoral admissions.
    4. What is charged on top? Get the fee bands and research training support charges in writing before you accept, self-funded or not.
    5. Is there a cohort? Not a marketing claim — ask how many research students the group currently has and whether they meet.

    The recommendation

    Take the funded studentship if one is available and the project is within reach of what you actually want to research. The stipend, the training grant, the cohort and the entitlements are worth more than the autonomy you give up, and the autonomy is usually less constrained in practice than it looks on the advert.

    Self-fund as a home student only with a question you genuinely own, a realistic view of a part-time timeline, and a written answer to the overrun question. At the pegged fee rate this is a defensible decision, and it is the right one for a lot of mid-career candidates who will never fit a studentship advert.

    Think very hard before self-funding as an international student at full fees.     The UKRI minimum doctoral stipend rises to £21,805 from 1 October 2026, up from £20,780 for 2025 to September 2026. Where a London weighting applies, the figures are £23,805 and £22,780 respectively. The minimum fee for academic year 2026 to 2027 is £5,238.

    Those are the published minimums for studentships funded through UKRI training grants. What follows sets out what they cover, what they do not, and the one figure everybody quotes that UKRI does not actually publish.

    Four qualifications matter, and each one changes what an individual researcher actually receives.

    These are minimums, not standard rates. UKRI notes that grant holders may offer higher stipends within their budget regardless of location. Some disciplines and doctoral training entities pay above the floor.

    The London weighting is not universal. UKRI states explicitly that the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council does not offer a London weighting. If you are applying to an EPSRC-funded studentship in London, do not budget for it.

    Part-time awards are pro-rated. The figures above are for full-time students; part-time students receive a proportionate amount.

    The fee is not paid to you. The minimum fee is drawn by your research organisation from the UKRI grant. UKRI contributes only up to the value of home fee rates, so international students may need to make a contribution towards their fees depending on the arrangement.

    The figure UKRI does not publish

    Ask how long a UKRI studentship lasts and you will be told 3.5 years or 4 years with great confidence. UKRI publishes no sector-wide duration.

    Its training grant terms and conditions devolve the decision, stating that research organisations can decide the duration of a studentship provided this accords with the awarding council’s specifications, and its guidance repeats that duration must fall within any parameters specified by the awarding council. There is no single UKRI-wide number to cite.

    The practical consequence: the only authoritative source for your funded period is the advert and your offer letter. This matters more than it sounds, because your funded period is what your writing-up timeline has to fit inside — and UKRI’s guidance sets the expectation that research organisations support students to complete their doctoral training, including submission of the thesis, within their funded period.

    What else a UKRI studentship includes

    Beyond stipend and fees, UKRI’s published terms set out entitlements that candidates frequently do not know they have:

    • Sick leave, with the stipend continuing during periods of illness.
    • Family leave, including where you or your partner is pregnant or you are adopting.
    • Additional leave, for example for bereavement or jury service.
    • A phased return to study after a period of leave, on your normal stipend, with the non-studying time taken as leave.
    • Changes of mode between full-time and part-time, which you can request at any time; UKRI does not limit how many times you can request one.

    UKRI is also explicit about what your provider cannot do: it cannot ask you to do work that is not part of your studentship in return for your stipend, use training grant funds to employ you, make you do extra work even if paid separately, or charge additional tuition fees during your funded period beyond some international fees.

    Those provisions are worth reading in full if you are being asked to take on teaching or lab duties in a way that feels like a condition of your funding rather than a paid opportunity.

    If your funding is not from UKRI

    A substantial share of UK doctoral researchers are funded by something other than a research council training grant, and none of the figures above bind those routes. University-funded studentships, charity and trust funding, industry-sponsored projects, overseas government scholarships and self-funding each set their own terms.

    Some of these match or exceed UKRI rates deliberately, because departments benchmark against them to compete for candidates. Others do not, and there is no floor. The questions worth asking of any non-UKRI offer are the same ones UKRI answers in published form: what is the stipend, is it index-linked or fixed for the duration, what is the funded period, what happens to leave entitlements, and is there a research training support grant for fieldwork and conference travel.

    Get the answers in writing before accepting. An offer that is generous on headline stipend but silent on sick leave and overrun is not obviously better than one paying the UKRI minimum with published terms behind it.

    The part the figures do not capture

    A stipend is paid tax-free, which makes direct comparison with an advertised graduate salary misleading in your favour. Against that, it is not a salary: it does not build pension entitlement, and it is fixed while your costs are not.

    The sector’s own survey data indicates this bites. Advance HE’s Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 2025, which gathered 35,475 responses from 93 institutions, found that among researchers who had considered leaving their programme, 14% cited financial difficulties — behind mental or emotional health at 20%, and ahead of balancing research with other commitments at 13%.

    Two honest caveats on that survey, since this article is about being precise with numbers: PRES 2025 included four Australian institutions, so it is not a pure UK snapshot, and it publishes absolute response counts rather than a response rate.

    What to check before you accept an offer

    1. The stipend amount and whether it exceeds the minimum. Some awards do.
    2. Whether a London weighting applies — remembering the EPSRC exception.
    3. The funded duration, from the advert and offer letter, since no national figure exists.
    4. What happens if you overrun. An unfunded writing-up period is a common and under-discussed part of the UK doctorate.
    5. Whether a research training support grant is included for fieldwork, conferences and equipment, and how much.

It is a document that has to persuade a panel — usually reading dozens of applications in one sitting, several of them outside their own specialism — that your project is important, original and, above all, deliverable in the funded period by you.

    Know the funding landscape before you write

    Understanding what a studentship actually consists of shapes what you can credibly propose. UK Research and Innovation sets minimum rates for the studentships funded through its training grants.     Section by section

    Title and summary

    The title should name the topic and signal the approach. Save the clever phrasing; clarity converts better with a panel reading its twentieth application.

    The summary is the most consequential paragraph you will write, because for some panel members it is the only part they read closely. In roughly 150 words: the problem, the gap, your question, your approach, and what will be known at the end that is not known now.

    Background and rationale

    Not a literature review — an argument that builds a gap. Move from the broad field, to the specific debate, to the precise thing that is unresolved, in about a page. Every source you cite should be doing work towards establishing that gap.

    The failure mode is a comprehensive survey demonstrating that you have read widely. Panels do not doubt that. They want to see that you can identify the one question that matters.

    Research questions or objectives

    Two to four, numbered, each answerable. If a question cannot be answered by any study you could realistically run, it is an aspiration rather than an objective.

    Make them build. A strong set typically moves from establishing something, to explaining it, to testing the explanation — which also gives your thesis its chapter structure and demonstrates that you have thought about the project as a whole.

    Methodology

    Specific enough to be credible, brief enough to leave room for the rest. Name the design, the data sources or participants, the sampling or selection approach, and the analytical method. Tie each element back to a numbered research question.

    Flag anything that requires permission — ethical approval, data access agreements, fieldwork permits, archive access — and say how you will obtain it. A panel that spots an unaddressed access dependency will assume the project may stall.

    Timeline

    Panels read the timeline as a proxy for judgement. Three things distinguish a credible one.

    It reserves genuine time for writing up. A plan where data collection runs to the final months and writing appears as a short closing block tells an experienced panel that you have not done this before.

    It includes approvals as scheduled activities. Ethical review takes weeks and sometimes months. Building it into the plan demonstrates you know the process exists.

    It contains slack. Fieldwork overruns, recruitment is slower than expected, an archive closes. A plan with no contingency is not a plan.

    Map the phases against the duration specified in the advert, and mark your institution’s progression milestones — the upgrade or confirmation review in particular — since panels like to see that you understand the structure of a UK doctorate.

    Contribution and significance

    State what will be known at the end that is not known now, and who will care. Be precise about the form of the contribution rather than gesturing at importance. Where the funder emphasises impact beyond academia, address it concretely — naming the sector or practice community that could use the finding — rather than with generic assertions.

    Fit with the supervisor and department

    Name your proposed supervisor and say specifically why their expertise suits this project, referring to their work. Name the departmental resources the project needs: a laboratory, a data centre, a research group, a specialist archive.

    Contact your prospective supervisor before submitting wherever the process permits it. Supervisors routinely help shape proposals into fundable ones, and a proposal arriving unannounced is at a real disadvantage against one developed in consultation.

    The three most common reasons proposals fail

    Too ambitious. The single most frequent flaw. A project that would take a well-resourced team five years, proposed as an individual doctorate. Panels read overreach as inexperience. Narrow the question and say explicitly what you have chosen not to do.

    The gap is not real. “No one has studied X in [country]” is not sufficient unless you can say why studying it there would change what we know. Absence is not the same as significance.

    The methods do not answer the questions. Surprisingly common — a proposal asking why something happens, then proposing a design that can only establish whether it happens. Check each question against its method explicitly.

    Before you submit

    Read it as a panel member would: skim the summary, glance at the questions, check the timeline, then decide whether to read properly. If that pass does not tell you what the project is and why it matters, restructure.

    Then have someone outside your field read it. If they cannot explain your project back to you, the proposal is doing too much work for a specialist reader and not enough for the generalist who may be assessing it.

    Finally, be clear-eyed about the argument you are being asked to make.
