    What Counts as an Original Contribution to Knowledge in a UK PhD Thesis?

    A UK doctorate requires work that demonstrates an original contribution to knowledge in your subject, field or profession — achieved either through original research or through the original application of existing knowledge or understanding. Originality does not mean a breakthrough. It means something is known, or can be done, that was not before.

    That wording is not folklore. It is close to the standard set out in the QAA’s Characteristics Statement: Doctoral Degree, which states that all UK doctorates, regardless of their form, continue to require the main focus of the candidate’s work to demonstrate an original contribution to knowledge in their subject, field or profession, through original research or the original application of existing knowledge or understanding.

    Note the second clause, because it is the one candidates overlook. Original application of existing knowledge counts. You do not have to invent a theory. Applying an established framework somewhere it has never been applied, in a way that produces new understanding, satisfies the requirement.

    Why does this question cause so much anxiety?

    Because candidates measure themselves against the wrong benchmark. The image of the doctorate as a paradigm shift is drawn from the small number of theses that turn out that way in retrospect, not from the standard examiners apply.

    The QAA offers a useful reassurance on the examination itself: while the oral examination is a difficult experience for some and may lead to a recommendation that a doctoral degree not be awarded, only a minority of candidates fail the doctoral assessment outright. The system is not designed to catch you out on originality. It is designed to check that a contribution exists and that you can defend it.

    What forms can an original contribution take?

    These are the shapes examiners routinely recognise. Most theses claim two or three, not one.

    1. New empirical findings. You collected data nobody had collected and it shows something.
    2. A new population, context or setting. An established relationship tested where it had not been tested — strongest when you can say why that context might behave differently.
    3. A new method or instrument. A technique, measure or procedure that did not exist, or an existing one adapted and validated for a new purpose.
    4. A theoretical synthesis. Two literatures that had not spoken to each other, brought together in a way that resolves something.
    5. A boundary condition. Showing where an accepted relationship stops holding. Often undervalued by candidates and highly valued by examiners.
    6. A mechanism. Prior work established that A relates to B; you show how.
    7. Reinterpretation of existing material. Common in the humanities — an archive, corpus or body of texts read through a new lens that yields a defensible new reading.
    8. A replication that changes the picture. Particularly where a widely cited finding fails to reproduce, or reproduces only under conditions nobody had specified.
    9. New application to practice. Central to professional and practice-based doctorates, where existing knowledge is applied to a professional problem in a way that produces transferable understanding.

    Mapping what is already known is how you locate the gap — and how you prove to examiners that it is genuinely empty.

    How original is original enough?

    The practical test: could someone cite your thesis for something they could not cite anything else for? If yes, you have a contribution.

    A second, harsher test that is worth applying honestly: if your thesis did not exist, what would the field be missing? An answer of “nothing, really — someone else showed this” indicates a problem. An answer of “the only evidence on this question from this context” is sufficient.

    Note what the standard does not require. It does not require your finding to be important to everyone, to be positive rather than null, to be large, or to be immediately useful. It requires it to be new, to be defensible, and to be yours.

    Does the UK doctorate grade originality?

    No, and this surprises many candidates. The QAA states plainly that the UK doctorate is not graded or classified in any way, it is a pass/fail only, and that once amendments are made there is no indication on the award certificate of the corrections the examiners required.

    The practical consequence is worth internalising while you write. There is no first-class PhD. There is no benefit in a thesis that is twice as long or claims twice as much as it can support. There is a substantial cost to overclaiming, because an indefensible claim is the easiest thing for an examiner to attack. Aim for a contribution you can defend completely rather than one that sounds impressive.

    How should you state your contribution?

    In one sentence, in the form: “This thesis shows that [specific claim], which was not previously established because [reason].”

    Compare a weak version — “This thesis contributes to the literature on organisational trust” — with a strong one: “This thesis shows that the relationship between supervisory contact and doctoral researcher wellbeing is conditional on disciplinary norms about independence, a boundary condition that previous cross-disciplinary studies could not detect because they aggregated across fields.”

    The second names the finding, names what is new, and explains why nobody had it. It also gives your examiners something concrete to test, which is exactly what you want — a vague claim invites open-ended questioning, while a precise one invites questions you have already prepared for.

    When should you work out what your contribution is?

    Earlier than most candidates do, and then again at the end. You should be able to state a provisional contribution at the point of your upgrade or confirmation review, because that is substantially what the panel is assessing. You should expect it to change.

    The version you defend in your viva is usually clearer and often more modest than the version you proposed. That is not failure — it is what happens when a claim meets three years of evidence. Candidates who find their contribution has narrowed have usually not lost anything; they have found the claim they can actually defend.

    What if you fear you do not have one?

    This is common in the writing-up year and is usually a symptom of proximity rather than of an actual deficiency. Three checks.

    Ask what you know now that you did not at the start, excluding things you simply read. What did your data tell you? That is your contribution, however small it feels from the inside.

    Ask your supervisor directly. Not “is this enough” — ask them to state your contribution in a sentence. Their answer is frequently clearer than your own, because they are not standing inside it.

    Look at recently passed theses in your department. Not the celebrated ones — ordinary, recent, successful ones. The realistic standard is almost always lower and narrower than the one candidates imagine.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does a PhD have to be published to count as an original contribution?

    No. The requirement is that the work constitutes an original contribution, not that it has appeared in print. Publication expectations vary by discipline and supervisor, but they are conventions rather than a condition of the award.

    Can a replication study be a PhD?

    Yes, particularly where a widely cited finding has never been independently tested, or where your replication establishes conditions under which it does or does not hold. Framed as a boundary condition or a test of generalisability, this is a recognised contribution.

    Is a null result an original contribution?

    It can be, especially where the effect was widely assumed to exist. What matters is that your study was capable of detecting the effect had it been there, so a well-powered null result with a precise estimate is far more defensible than an underpowered one.

    What if someone publishes my finding while I am writing up?

    It happens, and it is not fatal. Your work remains independent, and independent corroboration has value. Address it directly in your discussion — cite the new paper, explain what your work adds, and note any differences in method or context. Concealing it would be far worse than acknowledging it.

    How does a professional doctorate differ on originality?

    The standard is the same, but the contribution more often takes the form of the original application of existing knowledge to a professional problem. The QAA’s wording explicitly accommodates this, which is why the “original application” clause matters.

    Can my contribution be methodological rather than substantive?

    Yes. Developing, adapting or validating a method or instrument is a recognised form of contribution. Where this is your main claim, examiners will expect rigorous evidence that the method works — validation becomes the substance of the thesis rather than a preliminary.

    Do I need to prove nobody has done this before?

    You need to demonstrate a thorough, current search of the relevant literature and to show why the gap exists. Absolute proof of absence is not achievable, and examiners do not expect it — what they expect is that you would have found the work had it existed.

    Should I claim more than one contribution?

    Most theses legitimately claim two or three, typically one substantive and one methodological. Claim what you can defend individually. A list of six weakly supported contributions is materially weaker than two solid ones.

    How does my contribution relate to the thesis title?

    The title should point at it. A title that describes only the topic — the population, the setting — makes examiners hunt for the claim. A title that signals what was found orients them from the first page.

    How to Write the Discussion Chapter of a PhD Thesis (with a Worked Example)

    The discussion is the chapter examiners read most carefully, because it is where the thesis stops reporting and starts arguing. Your results chapter established what you found. The discussion has to establish what it means, why it matters, and what the field should do differently now — and it has to do that without repeating your results or overclaiming beyond them.

    Most struggling discussion chapters fail in one of two directions. Either they restate the findings in slightly different words, producing a second results chapter with more hedging. Or they leap straight to grand claims the data cannot bear. What follows is a structure that avoids both.

    What the chapter has to achieve

    The QAA’s Characteristics Statement: Doctoral Degree sets out the standard the whole thesis is working towards: all UK doctorates require the main focus of the candidate’s work to demonstrate an original contribution to knowledge in their subject, field or profession, through original research or the original application of existing knowledge or understanding.

    Your discussion is where that contribution becomes explicit. Everything before it is evidence. This chapter is the argument the evidence supports.

    The seven moves

    Move 1: Restate the contribution in one paragraph

    Open by answering your research questions directly. Not the methods, not the caveats — the answers. Examiners should be able to read your first paragraph and know what the thesis claims.

    A worked example:

    This thesis set out to establish whether X mediates the relationship between Y and Z in [context], and, if so, under what conditions. It found that X accounts for a substantial proportion of that relationship in [setting A] but not in [setting B], and that the difference is attributable to [mechanism]. The contribution is twofold: it identifies a boundary condition on a relationship that the existing literature has treated as general, and it provides the first evidence from [context], which prior work has not examined.

    That is roughly a hundred words and it does more work than most opening pages. Note the structure: what you asked, what you found, what is new about it.

    Move 2: Interpret each key finding against the literature

    Take your findings one at a time. For each, do three things: state it plainly, place it against what the literature predicted, and account for the relationship between the two.

    The account is the part that carries credit. If your finding agrees with prior work, say what it adds — replication in a new context, greater precision, a mechanism the earlier work inferred but did not test. Agreement is not automatically a contribution; you have to say why yours is not merely another instance.

    If your finding disagrees, this is your most valuable material, and it needs to be handled with care rather than triumph. Work through the candidate explanations in order: differences in sample or context, differences in measurement, differences in analytical approach, and only then a substantive theoretical difference. Examiners are impressed by candidates who consider that the discrepancy might be methodological before concluding that the field was wrong.

    Move 3: Build the findings into a single argument

    This is the move most commonly missed. A discussion organised strictly finding-by-finding reads as a list. Somewhere in the chapter, the separate results have to be brought together into a claim that none of them makes alone.

    Ask yourself: what does the whole thesis say that no individual chapter says? That sentence is your thesis in the older sense of the word, and it belongs here explicitly.

    Move 4: State the theoretical contribution precisely

    Vague contribution claims are the most common weakness in doctoral discussion chapters. “This study contributes to the literature on X” says nothing.

    Be specific about the form the contribution takes. Useful shapes include: extending a theory to a population or setting where it had not been tested; identifying a boundary condition where a relationship does not hold; reconciling two literatures that disagreed; supplying a mechanism where prior work established only an association; or developing a construct or instrument that did not previously exist.

    Name which one you are claiming. A precise, modest contribution is far stronger than a sweeping vague one, and it is much easier to defend under examination.

    Move 5: Draw out practical or policy implications, carefully

    If your work has applied implications, state them — but keep them proportionate to your evidence. The standard failure is a cross-sectional study that ends with confident recommendations for practice.

    The discipline here is simple: for each implication, be able to point at the specific finding that licenses it. If you cannot, it is speculation, and it should be labelled as a direction for future work rather than a recommendation.

    Move 6: Write limitations that strengthen the thesis

    Counter-intuitively, this section can add to your credibility rather than subtract from it. Examiners will find the limitations regardless. The question is whether you found them first.

    Write each limitation in three parts: what the constraint was, what effect it plausibly had on your findings, and what you did or would do to mitigate it. A limitation stated without its consequence is not analysis — it is a disclaimer.

    Compare these. “The sample was drawn from a single institution, which is a limitation.” Versus: “The sample was drawn from a single institution, which means the findings may reflect features of that institutional context — in particular its unusually high staff-to-researcher ratio — rather than the sector generally. The direction of any resulting bias would be to overstate the effect of supervisory contact, so the estimate reported here should be treated as an upper bound.”

    The second demonstrates command of your own study. Avoid, though, the opposite failure of listing every conceivable weakness until the thesis appears to establish nothing. Three or four substantive limitations, properly analysed, are worth more than a dozen perfunctory ones.

    Move 7: Point forward with specific future work

    “Further research is needed” is filler. Specify the study you would run next, and say what it would resolve that yours could not. If your work generated a hypothesis you could not test, name it. Examiners frequently ask what you would do with another three years, and a discussion that has already answered puts you ahead.

    1. What is new here? Answerable in one sentence, or the contribution is not clear enough.
    2. Do the data actually support this claim? Every claim traceable to a specific result.
    3. Have they engaged with work that disagrees? A discussion citing only supportive literature reads as selective.
    4. Do they know the weaknesses of their own study? Answered by the quality of the limitations section.

    How long, and how much overlap with the conclusion?

    Length varies by discipline and by whether your thesis has a separate concluding chapter. Where the two are separate, the working division is that the discussion interprets findings against the literature, while the conclusion states the contribution, the implications and the closing argument without introducing new interpretation.

    Where they are combined, the seven moves above still apply in the same order. Check your institution’s research degree regulations and, more usefully, read two or three recent successful theses from your own department — local convention varies more than published advice suggests, and your examiners are likely to share it.

    A practical drafting order

    Do not write this chapter front to back on the first pass. Draft Move 2 first, finding by finding, because it is the most concrete. Then write Move 4, since the contribution usually becomes clear only once you have interpreted everything. Then Move 3, which depends on both. Write Move 1 last, when you finally know what the chapter argues.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should the discussion repeat the numbers from my results chapter?

    Refer to findings, but do not re-report them in full. Give enough for the reader to follow the argument — the direction of an effect and its approximate magnitude — and cross-reference the results chapter for the detail. Full tables repeated here signal that the chapter is describing rather than interpreting.

    Can I introduce new literature in the discussion?

    Yes, and it is often necessary. Findings you did not anticipate require literature you did not review at the outset. What you should not do is introduce a body of work so central that its absence from your literature review looks like an oversight.

    How do I discuss a null result?

    Directly, and with attention to power. Distinguish between evidence of absence and absence of evidence, report the precision of your estimate, and consider methodological explanations alongside theoretical ones. A well-analysed null result is a legitimate doctoral contribution, particularly where the effect was widely assumed.

    Is it acceptable to say my findings contradict a well-known study?

    Yes, provided you work through the alternative explanations first and you are specific about what differs between the two studies. Examiners respect a candidate who can say clearly why two studies diverge; they are wary of one who dismisses established work without accounting for it.

    How many limitations should I include?

    Three or four substantive ones, each with its consequence analysed. Quantity is not the measure — a short section that shows you understand how your design shapes your conclusions beats a long list of generic caveats.

    Should the discussion chapter be written before or after the introduction?

    After. The introduction has to promise what the thesis delivers, and you cannot know precisely what that is until the discussion is drafted. Writing the introduction first is the most common cause of a mismatch between what a thesis claims at the start and what it demonstrates at the end.
